Dear Parishioners of Saint Luke,
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. It is with deep gratitude and humility that I write to you as your new pastor. My name is Fr. Gabriel Terrill, and I am honored to begin my ministry as your new parochial administrator at Saint Luke Parish. I am filled with hope and excitement as I move into this role as minister and pastor at your parish. As I begin this new assignment, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Fr. Pawel Stawarczyk , who has faithfully served this community with dedication, compassion, and wisdom for more than 15 years. I know I am no replacement for Fr. Pawel, and I am grateful for the ways in which he has loved and served this community. Please join me in praying for Fr. Pawel as he moves on to further theological studies. I also ask that you please pray for me as I get to know you and you get to know me. Change is always difficult, but the one constant in our life as believers is the Lord who is never changing but always new. As such I trust that the Lord will continue to work in great ways by his grace and his Bride the Church as I begin my time at Saint Luke’s. To share a little about myself, It may sound cliché, but I’ve wanted to be a priest for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I also dreamed of being a cowboy, an astronaut, and even a monk-scientist, but the priesthood was the one desire that stayed with me and matured over time as I grew in prayer and received the sacraments. I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved to Mesa, Arizona in 2001 with my family. I’m the second of seven kids, with an older sister, three younger brothers, and twin sisters to round out the seven. I received my first reconciliation and Holy Communion soon after we moved and it was this reception of sacraments, along with altar serving, that deeply impacted me and helped grow my desire to serve God as a priest. A major inspiration in my life was Fr. Mary Patt, a Cistercian Trappist monk in Utah. His deep peace and trust in God’s providence taught me that God calls us not to misery, but to joy and fulfillment. He taught me that no matter what may come to pass, there is security and peace in Christ and no one can take away our faith. Only we can put it down or take it up like the cross. Because of his example as a joyful and peaceful trappist priest, I realized that God isn’t calling me to a vocation of misery, but to a life of joy and hope in Christ, as he does for all of us. In high school, I realized—through writing to a seminarian—that priests have personalities! That discovery affirmed my belief that God could use my gifts (and quirks) in His service. After graduation, I entered seminary for the Diocese of Phoenix. I studied philosophy in Ohio and theology in Rome before being ordained during the pandemic on June 6, 2020. Since then, I’ve been blessed to serve at Our Lady Queen of Peace and as chaplain at Seton Catholic Prep, as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and now as your parochial administrator at Saint Luke’s Catholic Parish. Gracia y paz a ustedes de parte de Dios nuestro Padre y del Señor Jesucristo. Es con profunda gratitud y humildad que les escribo como su nuevo pastor. Me llamo es Padre Gabriel Terrill y me siento honrado de comenzar mi ministerio como su nuevo administrador parroquial en la Parroquia de San Lucas. Estoy lleno de esperanza y entusiasmo al asumir este rol como pastor y servidor. Al comenzar esta nueva asignación, quiero expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento al Padre Pavel Stawarczyk, quien ha servido fielmente a esta comunidad con dedicación, compasión y sabiduría durante más de 15 años. Sé que no soy un reemplazo para el Padre Pawel, y estoy agradecido por todas las formas en que él ha amado y servido a esta comunidad. Para compartir un poco sobre mí, puede sonar a cliché, pero he querido ser sacerdote desde que tengo memoria. De niño también soñaba con ser vaquero, astronauta e incluso monje-científico, pero el sacerdocio fue el único deseo que permaneció y maduró con el tiempo, a medida que crecía en la oración y en la recepción de los sacramentos. Nací en Salt Lake City, Utah, y me mudé con mi familia a Mesa, Arizona, en 2001. Soy el segundo de siete hermanos: tengo una hermana mayor, tres hermanos menores y dos hermanas gemelas. Una gran inspiración en mi vida fue el P. Mary Patt, un monje trapense cisterciense en Utah. Su profunda paz y confianza en la providencia de Dios me enseñaron que Dios no nos llama a la miseria, sino a la alegría y a la plenitud. Él me mostró que, pase lo que pase, hay seguridad y paz en Cristo, y que nadie puede quitarnos la fe: sólo nosotros podemos dejarla o abrazarla, como a la cruz. Por su ejemplo como sacerdote trapense alegre y lleno de paz, comprendí que Dios no me llama a una vocación de sufrimiento, sino a una vida de gozo y esperanza en Cristo, como lo hace con todos nosotros. En la preparatoria, me di cuenta —escribiéndome con un seminarista— de que ¡los sacerdotes también tienen personalidad! Ese descubrimiento reafirmó mi convicción de que Dios puede usar mis dones (y mis rarezas) para su servicio. Después de graduarme, entré al seminario para la Diócesis de Phoenix. Estudié filosofía en Ohio y teología en Roma, y fui ordenado sacerdote durante la pandemia, el 6 de junio de 2020. Desde entonces, he tenido la bendición de servir en Our Lady Queen of Peace, como capellán en Seton Catholic Prep, como vicario parroquial en Our Lady of Mount Carmel, y ahora como su administrador parroquial en la Parroquia de San Lucas. ¡Estoy emocionado por conocerlos!
